Nel novembre 1954 Ferdinand Porsche consegnò alla Studebaker il prototipo, comprensivo di motore, del modello 542, ma la fusione del marchio americano con la Packard fece accantonare il progetto. Il prototipo studiato dalla Porsche era una berlina quattro porte sulle stesse dimensioni del modello "Champion", mentre il motore era un 3000 cc che seguiva gli stessi schemi usati per la Volkswagen. Il "Modello 542" fu il primo di tre prototipi presentati dalla Porsche alla Studebaker, prima che questa fosse assorbita dalla Packard.
