La XNR deve il suo nome al suo disegnatore, Virgil M. Exner, Chief Designer del gruppo Chrysler. Di questa espressione molto personale della sua filosofia di disegno, Exner ebbe a dire che lui "si stava sforzando di evitare la grandezza e la staticità che sono sgraziate e non si addicono ad un'automobile. La meta è tentare di dare un look aggraziato con una forma che ispira movimento. La forma a cuneo esprime questa funzione dell'automobile perchè da un senso di direzione".
La costruzione della XNR fu affidata alla Carrozzeria Ghia.

The XNR owed its name to its designer, Virgil M. Exner, Chrysler's styling chief. In this very personal expression of his design philosophy, Exner said he was "striving to avoid the static and bulky, which is ugly and not what an automobile should look like. The goal is to try for the graceful look, with a built.in feeling of motion. The wedge shape expresses the function of automobiles because it imparts a sense of direction".
Contruction of the XNR was entrusted to Ghia.
