La Corvette Indy, disegnata e costruita nel 1986, aveva un design addirittura eccessivo per le Chevrolet di quegli anni. La Corvette corrente era sul mercato da due anni, ma Chevrolet stava tentando di studiare un nuovo design per la seguente generazione, seguendo la mode delle supercar degli anni novanta.
Motorizzata dallo Chevrolet Ilmor usato nella Indy, aveva il V8 spostato in avanti rispetto alle ruote posteriori. La Corvette Indy fu costruita con l'aiuto della Lotus, che fabbricò i due prototipi per i collaudi e le esibizioni.

The Corvette Indy, designed and built in 1986, was a ground-breaking design for Chevrolet. The current Corvette had been on the market for two years, but Chevrolet were trying to get a feel for how the next generation due for release in the mid nineties would look and perform.
Powered by the new Indy Chevrolet Ilmor, the Indy design had the V8 sitting sideways ahead of the rear wheels. The Indy was built with the help of Lotus, who fabricated two running prototypes for both testing and display.
