Nel 1965 la American Motors si è impegnata a sviluppare un'automobile da inserire nel segmento delle pony cars cioè delle auto in formato ridotto, definite dal concetto bivalente piccolo formato-basso prezzo. Molti studi e molti prototipi sono stati sviluppati per arrivare a definire le linee della Javelin, la pony car della AM. Tra questi la Cavalier, la Vixen, la AMX I e la AMX II. La caratteristica principale di questi quattro prototipi è la forte personalità estetica, l'unica arma per battere la concorrenza di Ford Mustang, Chevrolet Camaro e simili.
